What Is Wellness & Preventative OB/GYN Care?
Wellness and preventative care centers on your annual well-woman visit, a yearly touchpoint designed to catch any potential health concerns early and keep you informed about what’s happening in your body when things start to feel awry. During your visit, you and your provider will:
- Discuss family history, family planning, and personal habits, such as alcohol and tobacco use
- Complete a breast exam to check for lumps or other abnormalities
- Complete an abdominal exam to check for masses or other abnormalities
- Complete a pelvic exam, including a Pap test, to check for infections and precancerous cells in the vagina and cervix
- Schedule necessary blood and urine tests as needed to screen for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sexually transmitted infections
- Discuss contraception, fertility, or other reproductive health concerns
- Ask questions and raise concerns about any women’s health issues you’re experiencing
- Set and make plans for achieving health goals, such as being active and maintaining a healthy weight
What Should I Expect During My Wellness & Preventative Care Visit?
Your provider will walk you through each part of your visit and make sure you have time to ask questions along the way. A key part of most wellness visits is the Pap test.
Pap Test
A regular Pap test can save your life. It checks for abnormal or precancerous cells on the cervix before they have a chance to develop into cancer or spread to other areas of the body. When cervical cancer is caught early, treatment is often easier and the chances of a full recovery are far greater. Along with a pelvic exam, a Pap test should be a routine part of every woman’s preventative care.
Breast Examination
During your breast exam, your physician will check your breasts for signs of any potential problems, such as a lump or change in tissue. They will examine each breast by moving their fingers around in a methodical pattern, checking both the breast and the surrounding lymph node areas. You may also be shown how to perform monthly self-exams at home, so you know what’s normal for your body and can catch changes early between visits.
Screenings
Your physician will also recommend screenings based on your age and personal risk factors, since catching a condition early is often what makes it treatable.
Why Is It Important to Pursue Wellness & Preventative Health?
It’s easy to put off a wellness visit when you feel fine. But many of the conditions preventative care is designed to catch, from cervical changes to early signs of heart disease, often develop silently, with no symptoms until they’ve progressed. That’s the entire point of a well-woman visit. It isn’t about treating a problem you already are aware of, it’s about finding out about a problem before it finds you.
Preventative care also compounds over time. A single visit gives your provider a real-time snapshot, but your history of annual visits gives them a pattern, so they can spot when something is genuinely new versus part of your normal baseline. That pattern is often what makes early detection possible in the first place. Beyond the physical screenings, these visits are a standing opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and build a rapport with a provider who actually knows your history, so that when something does come up, you’re not starting from scratch.
Screenings Change as You Age
Just as your body changes over time, so do the screenings that matter most. Your provider will recommend a schedule based on your age, health history, and risk factors.
Women Younger than 40
- Blood pressure check at least every two years
- Cholesterol check as recommended by your physician
- Blood glucose check to screen for diabetes as recommended by your physician
- Pelvic exam
- Pap test every three years
Women 40 and Older
- Blood pressure check each year
- Cholesterol check as recommended by your physician
- Diabetes screening every three years beginning at age 44
- Colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50
- Mammogram every one or two years as recommended by your physician
You should start to receive annual well-woman exams between the ages of 18 and 21, or as soon as you become sexually active, whichever comes first. If you are experiencing any women’s health concerns, don’t wait – schedule your exam sooner.
Why Do Patients Choose Brigham Wellesley OB/GYN Associates for Their Wellness & Preventative Care?
Prevention only works if you actually keep coming back, so we’ve built our wellness visits around making that part easy. Rather than rushing through a checklist, our providers take the time to understand your history, your risk factors, and what’s changed since your last visit, so every screening we recommend actually makes sense for you. Consistency is part of the care itself: the more your provider knows about your baseline health, the faster they can spot something that doesn’t look right.
We also know that a lot can happen in the year between visits, so we leave room in every appointment to talk about whatever is actually on your mind, not just what’s on the chart. Whether that’s a new symptom, a family history or current diagnosis you’re worried about, or a health goal you’re working toward, our specialists want to be a part of that conversation too. Preventative care works best as an ongoing partnership, and that’s exactly how we approach it.

Wellness & Preventative Care FAQS
Does insurance cover my annual well-woman visit?
Most insurance plans cover annual well-woman visits and preventative screenings at no out-of-pocket cost. Coverage can vary by plan, so our team can help verify your benefits before your appointment.
What’s the difference between a wellness visit and a sick visit?
A wellness visit is a preventative appointment focused on screenings, checkups, and catching potential issues early, even when you feel healthy. A sick visit addresses a specific symptom or concern you’re already experiencing. If new concerns come up during a wellness visit, your provider can often address them in the same appointment.
Do I need to fast before my wellness visit?
If bloodwork is part of your visit, such as a cholesterol or glucose screening, your provider may recommend fasting beforehand. Our office will let you know in advance if fasting is necessary so that you can plan accordingly.
How often should I be screened for sexually transmitted infections?
STI screening recommendations depend on your age, sexual activity, and risk factors. Your provider will discuss how often you should be tested based on your individual history during your wellness visit.
Which vaccines are typically discussed during a preventative care visit?
Common vaccines discussed include the annual flu shot, HPV vaccine, and Tdap, along with any others recommended based on your age, health history, or upcoming travel plans.
What should I bring to my first wellness and preventative care appointment?
It’s helpful to bring a list of current medications, your family health history, your insurance card, and any questions or symptoms you’d like to discuss. If you’re a new patient, arriving a few minutes early to complete paperwork is also recommended.
How long does a typical well-woman visit take?
Most annual well-woman visits take between 30 minutes to an hour, though the exact length can vary depending on the screenings and conversations needed during your appointment.
What happens if my Pap test comes back abnormal?
An abnormal Pap test doesn’t necessarily mean cancer. It often means further testing, such as a repeat Pap test or colposcopy, is needed to get a clearer picture. Your provider will walk you through next steps and explain what the results mean for you.
Why does my family health history matter for preventative care?
Your family history helps your provider identify conditions you may be at higher risk for, such as certain cancers, heart disease, or diabetes, which can shape which screenings are recommended and how often.
Can I schedule a wellness visit if I don’t have any current health concerns?
Yes, and it’s encouraged. Wellness visits are designed for exactly that: catching potential issues before symptoms appear. Waiting until something feels wrong means missing the earlier, easier-to-treat stage of many conditions.
