Sonata Treatment

Sonata Treatment for Fibroids in Wellesley, MA | Brigham Wellesley OB/GYN Associates

At Brigham Wellesley OB/GYN Associates, we believe fibroid treatment shouldn’t mean choosing between living with disruptive symptoms and undergoing major surgery. That’s why we’re proud to offer our patients the Sonata Treatment, an incision-free option that allows many women to find lasting relief from fibroid symptoms while preserving their uterus and minimizing downtime.

If heavy periods, pelvic pressure, or other fibroid symptoms have been holding you back, it’s time to explore a treatment option built around your life, not around a lengthy recovery. To learn if Sonata is right for you, call (781) 235-4000 or request an appointment online.

What Is the Sonata Treatment?

The Sonata Treatment is an incision-less procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to shrink uterine fibroids from the inside out. Unlike traditional fibroid surgeries, Sonata requires no cutting, no abdominal incisions, and no removal of the uterus, making it an appealing option for women who want meaningful symptom relief without the extended recovery that comes with more invasive procedures.

Because the treatment is performed entirely through the natural opening of the cervix, there is no scarring involved, and many women are able to return to their normal routines within just a few days.

What Can I Expect Before and After Treatment?

Before Your Procedure

Your doctor will first confirm that Sonata is an appropriate and safe option for you based on the size, number, and location of your fibroids, along with your overall health history. A pregnancy test is typically performed beforehand to ensure the procedure is safe to move forward.

During Your Procedure

You’ll receive sedation or anesthesia tailored to your needs and preferences to ensure your comfort, so you can discuss with your provider what feels right for you. Many women are surprised by how quickly the procedure moves, especially compared to what they expected from a fibroid treatment.

During the treatment, your provider will place a specialized handpiece and ultrasound device through the vagina and cervix until it reaches the uterus. The built-in ultrasound tool maps your uterus and locates the exact size and position of the fibroids in real time on a screen. Small needles extend from the device into the fibroid tissue where safe radiofrequency energy passes through the needles to heat and destroy the targeted fibroid cells. The treated fibroids shrink gradually over the next few months, easing symptoms and allowing you to live a more comfortable life.

After Your Procedure

Recovery after Sonata is typically much shorter than recovery from surgical fibroid removal. Most patients experience only mild cramping, spotting, or discharge in the days following treatment, and many women return to their everyday activities within just a couple of days. Noticeable improvement in symptoms, particularly heavy menstrual bleeding, often develops gradually over the following months as the treated fibroid tissue continues to shrink.

How Does the Sonata Treatment Work?

During the Sonata procedure, your provider guides a slender device through the vagina and cervix and into the uterus, without ever making an incision. This device is equipped with a miniature ultrasound tip that allows your doctor to see each fibroid clearly from inside the uterine cavity.

Once a fibroid is located, your provider delivers targeted radiofrequency energy directly into the fibroid tissue. This heat causes the fibroid to break down gradually, and over the following weeks and months, your body naturally reabsorbs the treated tissue. If you have more than one fibroid, several can often be treated in the same visit.

The entire procedure typically takes less than an hour, depending on the size and number of fibroids being treated, and is generally performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day as your treatment.

The Sonata Clinical Trial

Women were surveyed 12 months after their Sonata Treatment and reported the following results:

97% would recommend Sonata treatment to a friend
95% reported a reduction in menstrual bleeding
50% returned to normal activity the next day

Who Is a Candidate for Sonata Treatments in Wellesley, MA?

The Sonata Treatment is designed for women experiencing symptomatic uterine fibroids, including those dealing with heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, or discomfort related to their fibroids. It can be used to treat a wide range of fibroid types, sizes, and locations within the uterus, often in a single visit.

Sonata may not be the right fit for every patient. For example, it isn’t recommended for women who are currently pregnant, have an active pelvic infection, or have a suspected gynecologic cancer. The best way to know if you’re a candidate is to talk with your OB/GYN about your specific symptoms, fibroid characteristics, and health goals.

Why Choose Sonata Over Other Fibroid Treatments?

Fibroids affect every woman differently, which is why treatment shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. Compared to more invasive options like myomectomy or hysterectomy, the Sonata Treatment offers several distinct advantages:

  • No Incisions or Scarring: Because the procedure is performed entirely through the cervix, there is no need for any cuts to the skin or abdomen.
  • Uterus-Preserving: Sonata treats fibroids directly while leaving the uterus intact, an important consideration for many women.
  • Minimal Downtime: Most patients are back to their normal routines within a few days, a significant difference compared to the weeks of recovery often associated with surgical fibroid removal.
  • Outpatient Convenience: The procedure is typically completed in a single visit, and you’ll return home the same day.
  • Treats Multiple Fibroid Types: Sonata can address a broad range of fibroid sizes and locations, often in just one procedure.

For many women who have postponed treatment because they weren’t ready for major surgery, Sonata offers a path toward relief that fits into real life.

Sonata Treatment for Fibroids FAQS

What are the symptoms of fibroids?

Uterine fibroids can cause a range of symptoms, though some women experience none at all. Common signs include:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent urination
  • Lower back pain
  • Bloating
  • Discomfort during intercourse

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, an evaluation with one of our OB/GYNs can help determine whether fibroids may be the cause.

Most patients tolerate the Sonata Treatment very well. Your provider will discuss anesthesia and sedation options with you ahead of time to ensure you feel comfortable throughout the entire procedure. Afterward, it’s common to experience mild cramping or discomfort for a few days, similar to menstrual cramps, which typically resolves on its own and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications or prescribed medications given to you by your doctor.

While some women notice improvement in their symptoms within the first few weeks, most experience significant relief from heavy menstrual bleeding within about three months as the treated fibroid tissue continues to shrink and is naturally reabsorbed by the body.

Will my insurance cover the Sonata Treatment?

Many insurance plans do provide coverage for the Sonata Treatment, though pre-authorization is often required. Our team can help you understand your specific coverage and work with your insurance provider to determine your benefits before moving forward.

Because the Sonata Treatment preserves the uterus, some women who undergo the procedure go on to have successful pregnancies. That said, the safety and effectiveness of Sonata specifically for women hoping to conceive afterward hasn’t been formally established, so it’s important to discuss your fertility goals with your doctor before deciding if this treatment is right for you.
