Gynecologic Care Options at Brigham Wellesley OB/GYN Associates in Wellesley, MA

Period Pain

Some discomfort during your period is common, but cramps or pain that keep you from work, school, or the things you enjoy aren’t something you have to push through. Period pain, or dysmenorrhea, can sometimes point to an underlying condition like endometriosis, fibroids, or adenomyosis, all of which are very treatable once identified.

We’ll talk through your symptoms and cycle history, then recommend options ranging from lifestyle changes and over-the-counter relief to hormonal therapy or imaging if something more may be going on.

Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain can be hard to pinpoint. It may be a persistent ache, sharp pain with certain movements, or discomfort during intimacy. Possible causes include ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, or issues with the bladder or digestive system.

Our team starts with a detailed conversation and physical exam, followed by imaging or lab work if needed. From there, we’ll walk you through treatment options, from medication and physical therapy to minimally invasive procedures.

Abnormal Menstrual Bleeding

Periods that are unusually heavy, last longer than a week, come at irregular times, or include bleeding between cycles are worth having checked. Abnormal bleeding can be caused by hormonal changes, polyps, fibroids, thyroid conditions, or certain medications, and it can lead to fatigue or anemia if left untreated.

We’ll review your cycle and may recommend blood work, an ultrasound, or other testing to find the cause. Treatment may include hormonal options, an IUD, or minimally invasive procedures, depending on what’s right for you.

Premenstrual Syndrome Management

Mood swings, bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, and irritability in the days before your period can affect your relationships, work, and overall well-being. For some patients, symptoms are severe enough to be considered premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a more intense form of PMS.

We’ll help you track your symptoms and build a plan that works for you, which may include lifestyle and nutrition changes, hormonal birth control, or medications that help regulate mood.

Vaginitis

Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina that can cause itching, irritation, unusual discharge, odor, or discomfort during urination or intimacy. The most common causes are bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and trichomoniasis. Because each is treated differently, an accurate diagnosis matters.

A quick exam and simple in-office testing can identify the cause, so we can prescribe the right treatment and help prevent future infections.

Lichen Sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic skin condition that most often affects the vulvar area, causing itching, discomfort, and thin, white patches of skin. Without treatment, it can lead to scarring and pain during intimacy, so early care makes a meaningful difference.

We can usually diagnose lichen sclerosus with an exam, sometimes confirmed with a small biopsy. Treatment typically involves prescription topical medication and regular follow-up visits to keep symptoms under control.

Vulvar Cysts/Abscesses

Vulvar cysts, including Bartholin’s gland cysts, can form when a gland near the vaginal opening becomes blocked. Small cysts are often painless, but a cyst that becomes infected can turn into an abscess, causing swelling, tenderness, and pain when sitting or walking.

Many small cysts resolve with warm soaks and monitoring. For larger or infected cysts, we offer in-office treatment to drain the area and relieve discomfort, along with options to help prevent recurrence.

Why Gynecologic Care Matters

Your gynecologic health is connected to so much more than reproduction. It’s tied to your hormones, your bone health, your heart health, and your overall sense of well-being. Regular gynecologic care isn’t just about addressing problems when they arise; it’s about staying ahead of them. Many conditions, from fibroids to early hormonal changes, are far easier to manage when they’re caught early on.

Beyond just the physical aspects, gynecologic care is also about being heard. So many patients spend years normalizing pain or discomfort because they’ve been told it’s just part of womanhood. Consistent, attentive care means you have a partner who takes your symptoms seriously, helps you understand your body, and supports you through every stage of life.

What to Expect from a Gynecologic Care Visit

Walking into a gynecology appointment can feel intimidating, especially if you’re dealing with a new or sensitive symptom. We want you to know that every visit starts with a conversation, not a rush to the exam table.

Here’s what to expect from your visit:

  • A thorough discussion of your history: We’ll ask about your symptoms, your menstrual cycle, your medical and family history, and anything that’s been on your mind. This is your time to share as much or as little detail as you’re comfortable with. Nothing is too small or embarrassing to mention.
  • A physical exam, when appropriate: Depending on your symptoms, this may include a pelvic exam, and we’ll always explain what we’re doing and why before we do it.
  • Testing or Imaging, if needed: Some visits call for bloodwork, an ultrasound, or other diagnostics to get a clearer picture of what’s going on.
  • A clear plan moving forward: Before you leave, you’ll understand what we found, what it means, and what the next steps are, whether that’s treatment, monitoring, or a referral.

Throughout your consultation, our priority is your comfort. You’re welcome to ask questions, pause at any point, or bring a support person with you.
