What Is Routine Prenatal Care?

Routine prenatal care refers to the regular checkups and screenings you’ll receive throughout your pregnancy to monitor your health and your baby’s growth and development. These visits allow your provider to catch potential concerns early, answer your questions as they come up, help you maintain your health and your baby’s growth in real time, and build a relationship with you so that by the time you’re in labor, you’re surrounded by a team who already knows you, your baby, and your birth plan.

How Often Will I Have Prenatal Visits?

Every pregnancy is unique, and we’ll adjust your visit schedule based on your individual health needs. If you have a higher-risk pregnancy, whether due to your age, a pre-existing condition, or something that develops along the way, your visit schedule may look a little different, and we’ll walk you through exactly what to expect.

A general guideline looks like this:

  • Weeks 4–28: Visits approximately every four weeks
  • Weeks 28–36: Visits approximately every two weeks
  • Weeks 36–40: Weekly visits until delivery
  • Beyond 40 weeks: More frequent monitoring as needed

What Happens at a Typical Prenatal Visit at Brigham Wellesley OB/GYN Associates?

Each visit is an opportunity for us to check in on both you and your growing baby, and to make sure you’re feeling supported at every stage. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, a visit may include:

  • Checking your weight and blood pressure
  • Listening to your baby’s heartbeat
  • Urine testing to screen for protein and sugar
  • Blood work to monitor your health and screen for conditions like anemia or gestational diabetes
  • Genetic screening and testing, when desired
  • Ultrasounds to check your baby’s development and confirm growth milestones
  • Open conversation about how you’re feeling physically and emotionally, and what’s on your mind

No question is too small, and no concern is unworthy of our time. These visits are yours, and we want you to leave every appointment feeling informed and reassured.

Prenatal Care Through Every Trimester

First Trimester (Weeks 1–13)

Your first visit is often the longest, as we confirm your pregnancy, review your health history, calculate your due date, and begin early screenings and bloodwork. This is also when we talk with you about nutrition, prenatal vitamins, and what to expect as your body begins to change.

Second Trimester (Weeks 14–27)

Many patients feel their best during this stretch. Visits during this time include your anatomy ultrasound, where we get a detailed look at your baby’s development, along with screening for gestational diabetes and continued monitoring of your health.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40+)

As your due date nears, visits become more frequent so that we can monitor your baby’s position, growth, and heart rate, along with your own health and readiness for labor. This is also the time to talk through your birth plan, ask questions about delivery, and make sure you feel prepared and confident heading into labor.

Routine Prenatal Care FAQs

When should I schedule my first prenatal appointment?

Most patients schedule their first visit as soon as they receive a positive pregnancy test, generally around eight weeks. Early prenatal care allows us to confirm your due date, review your health history, and begin important early screenings.

A typical, low-risk pregnancy involves roughly ten to fifteen prenatal visits, though this number can vary based on your individual health needs and whether any additional monitoring becomes necessary along the way.

It can be helpful to note any symptoms, questions, or concerns beforehand so you don’t forget them in the moment. Bringing a list of your current medications and any relevant medical history to your first visit is also helpful.

What if I have a high-risk pregnancy?

If you’re considered higher risk due to age, a pre-existing condition, or a complication that develops during your previous pregnancies, we’ll adjust your visit frequency and testing accordingly, and coordinate closely with any additional specialists needed to keep you and your baby healthy and safe.

Absolutely. We welcome your partner, a family member, or a close friend to join you for prenatal visits, especially for milestone moments like ultrasounds. Your comfort and support system matter to us.
