What Happens at a Prenatal Visit at Brigham Wellesley OB/GYN Associates?
Every prenatal appointment looks a little different depending on where you are in your pregnancy, but visits can include a combination of the following:
- A urine sample
- A review of your medical history and any new symptoms
- Blood pressure, weight, and height checks
- A conversation about your stress levels, sleep, and day-to-day habits
- Bloodwork, as needed
- Checking your baby’s heart rate
- Measuring and feeling your abdomen to track growth
- A fetal ultrasound
- Time to ask questions and voice any concerns
Beyond these routine checks, your provider may recommend additional testing at certain points in your pregnancy to proactively screen for issues like infection, birth defects, gestational diabetes, or fetal distress. Catching these issues early, when they’re most manageable, is one of the biggest reasons consistent prenatal care matters so much.
More Than Just Prenatal Check-Ins: A Partnership
Prenatal visits aren’t just about tracking numbers on a chart. They’re an ongoing conversation between you and your OB/GYN, who’s getting to know your pregnancy, your concerns, and your goals to help you prepare for a seamless delivery and beyond. Our team is here to support you through fertility struggles that led you here, high-risk pregnancy management, questions about labor and delivery, and education on breastfeeding, caring for your postpartum body, and newborn care as your due date approaches.
No question is too small, and no concern is unworthy of our undivided attention. Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your third, we know that every pregnancy comes with its own uncertainties, and we’re here to meet you with clear answers and steady support.
When Should I Schedule My First Prenatal Visit?
As soon as you suspect you’re pregnant, it’s time to call for your prenatal visit. Your first appointment sets the tone for everything that follows, giving your OB/GYN a baseline understanding of your health and helping you feel grounded as this new chapter of your life begins.
From there, your visits will become more frequent as your pregnancy progresses. A typical prenatal schedule may look something like this:
- Weeks 4–28: Once-a-month visits
- Weeks 28–36: Visits every two weeks
- Week 36 and beyond: Weekly visits until delivery
If your pregnancy is considered high-risk, whether due to age, weight, underlying health conditions, or other factors, your OB/GYN may recommend a more frequent schedule. Closer monitoring allows us to catch and address any complications as early as possible, which can often make all the difference in outcomes for both you and your baby.

Prenatal Visits FAQs
How soon should I make my first prenatal appointment?
As soon as you think you might be pregnant, even before a missed period is confirmed with a home test in some cases. Early prenatal care sets the foundation for a healthy pregnancy as well as your comfort and peace of mind as your baby starts to develop.
What if I’m considered high-risk?
High-risk pregnancies simply mean closer monitoring on our part. Your OB/GYN will tailor your appointment schedule and testing to keep a close eye on both your health and your baby’s. Receiving the diagnosis of “high-risk” shouldn’t cause panic or excess stress on you, and it’s our goal that it doesn’t, but rather allows us to curate a plan that best keeps your health and the health of your baby in mind. You worry about nurturing and growing your baby, and we’ll worry about the rest. If we do feel that a maternal-fetal medicine specialist is needed to assist us in your care, we have our excellent partners at Brigham and Women’s to help in your journey.
Will I need an ultrasound at every visit?
Not necessarily. Ultrasounds are typically performed at key milestones throughout pregnancy rather than at every single appointment, though your provider will let you know what to expect at each stage. If an ultrasound is not performed, you will hear the fetal heartbeat and feel reassurance at every visit that your baby is well.
Can I bring my partner to prenatal appointments?
Absolutely. We welcome partners and support people at any visit and encourage their involvement throughout your pregnancy journey.
What should I do if I have concerning symptoms between scheduled visits?
If you feel something is off, don’t hesitate to call our office right away. Don’t wait for your next appointment if something doesn’t feel right, and never doubt those instincts. We’re always here to help you determine next steps and never feel silly or paranoid for asking questions or coming in even if everything turns out to be just fine. Pregnancy can feel strange, scary, and unfamiliar; we’re here to help you navigate those feelings until your baby takes its first breath and after.
