What Is Cerene Cryoablation?
Cerene Cryoablation is a form of endometrial ablation, a procedure that treats heavy menstrual bleeding by reducing the lining of the uterus, or the endometrium, that builds up and sheds each month. Rather than using heat, as many older ablation methods do, Cerene uses extreme cold to gently freeze and treat the uterine lining.
During the procedure, a slim device is placed through the cervix and into the uterus. Once positioned, it delivers a controlled freezing treatment that reaches the entire uterine cavity, including contours that can be difficult for other ablation methods to fully treat. The freezing process itself typically takes only a few minutes.
Because Cerene uses cold rather than heat, it’s associated with less discomfort during the procedure and doesn’t require general anesthesia, meaning it can be performed comfortably right in our office rather than in a hospital or surgical center.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Cerene Cryoablation?
Cerene Cryoablation is designed for premenopausal patients who experience heavy menstrual bleeding due to benign, noncancerous causes and who have completed their childbearing. Because ablation reduces the uterine lining that supports a pregnancy, this procedure is not appropriate for patients who wish to become pregnant in the future.
You may be a good candidate for Cerene Cryoablation if you:
- Experience heavy or prolonged menstrual periods that interfere with your daily life
- Have tried other treatments, such as hormonal therapy, without adequate relief
- Have completed childbearing and are not planning future pregnancies
- Do not have an underlying condition, such as certain uterine abnormalities or suspected malignancy, that would make ablation unsafe
- Are looking for a non-hormonal option to manage heavy bleeding
During your consultation, your provider will review your medical history, discuss your bleeding pattern, and may recommend additional evaluation, such as an ultrasound or endometrial biopsy, to confirm that Cerene Cryoablation is an appropriate and safe option for you.
What Are the Benefits of Cerene Cryoablation?
Patients choose Cerene Cryoablation for a number of reasons, particularly its convenience and gentler treatment experience compared to older ablation technologies. Benefits often include:
- A quick, in-office procedure that doesn’t require general anesthesia
- Minimal downtime, with many patients returning to normal activities within a day or two
- No incisions and no hospital stay
- A treatment that reaches the full contour of the uterine cavity, including areas that can be harder to treat with heat-based methods
- A significant reduction in menstrual bleeding for the large majority of patients
- The potential to reduce or eliminate the need for future medical or surgical intervention for heavy bleeding
- A non-hormonal approach for patients who prefer to avoid hormonal treatments
Many patients report a meaningful improvement in their quality of life after Cerene Cryoablation, no longer needing to plan their schedules, wardrobe, or social lives around unpredictable, heavy periods.
What Should I Expect During My Cerene Cryoablation in Wellesley, MA?
We understand that any in-office gynecologic procedure can bring some nerves, even when it’s brief, well-tolerated, and the results are desired. Our team takes the time to walk you through every step, so nothing about your appointment feels rushed or unclear.
Before your procedure, we will review your health history and confirm your candidacy. You’ll typically be advised to take an over-the-counter pain reliever beforehand, and your provider may recommend a local anesthetic or numbing medication to help keep you comfortable.
During the procedure itself, you’ll lie on the exam table in the same position used for a routine pelvic exam, with your feet in footrests. Your provider will gently insert a speculum to visualize the cervix and gain access to the uterus. A slim, specialized device is passed through the cervix and positioned within the uterine cavity. Once positioned, the device delivers a controlled freezing treatment to the uterine lining. This step typically takes just a few minutes and is monitored closely throughout. Once complete, the device is removed, and you’ll rest briefly before being cleared to head home.
Most patients describe the sensation during Cerene Cryoablation as cramping or pressure, generally milder than what’s associated with older, heat-based ablation methods. The entire appointment usually takes under an hour, with the freezing portion of the procedure lasting only a few minutes.
What Happens After Cerene Cryoablation?
Recovery from Cerene Cryoablation is typically brief. Many patients experience mild cramping, similar to menstrual cramps, along with watery or light bloody discharge for several days to a couple of weeks as the uterine lining heals. Over-the-counter pain relievers and a heating pad can help manage any lingering discomfort.
Most patients are able to return to work and light daily activities within a day or two. Your provider may recommend avoiding tampons, intercourse, or swimming for a short period following your procedure to support healing.
It’s important to know that Cerene Cryoablation doesn’t produce results immediately. It typically takes a few menstrual cycles for the full reduction in bleeding to become apparent, as the treated uterine lining gradually thins over time. We will discuss what to expect cycle by cycle and will be available to answer questions as your body adjusts.
When Should I Contact My Provider After Cerene Cryoablation?
While most patients recover from Cerene Cryoablation without complications, you should contact our office if you experience:
- Bleeding that is significantly heavier than expected
- Fever or chills
- Severe or worsening pelvic pain
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Any symptoms that concern you or don’t seem to be improving

Cerene Cryoablation FAQs
Is Cerene Cryoablation painful?
Most patients experience cramping or pressure during the procedure rather than significant pain, and a local anesthetic or numbing medication is often used to improve comfort. Any discomfort typically eases quickly once the procedure is complete. If at any time during your treatment things become unbearable for you, don’t hesitate to let us know and we’ll do everything we can to make you more comfortable.
How long does the Cerene Cryoablation procedure take?
The freezing portion of the treatment usually takes only a few minutes, and your full in-office appointment generally takes under an hour.
Will Cerene Cryoablation stop my periods completely?
Not necessarily. Many patients experience significantly lighter periods, and some experience no bleeding at all, but results vary from patient to patient. Your provider can discuss realistic expectations based on your individual situation.
Can I still get pregnant after Cerene Cryoablation?
Cerene Cryoablation is intended for patients who have completed childbearing, as the procedure reduces the uterine lining needed to support a healthy pregnancy. It is not recommended for anyone planning future pregnancies.
How soon will I notice a difference in my bleeding?
It typically takes a few menstrual cycles for the full effect of the treatment to become apparent, as the uterine lining gradually thins over time.
How is Cerene Cryoablation different from other endometrial ablation methods?
Unlike heat-based ablation devices, Cerene Cryoablation uses controlled freezing, which many patients find more comfortable, and is designed to treat the full contour of the uterine cavity, including areas that can be more difficult to reach with other methods.
